Moviegoers who see Chris Rock’s new film Top Five may feel a pang of heartache during Tracy Morgan’s scenes, considering the latter is struggling to recover from a car crash that occurred this past June.
Now, Chris is giving fans an update on his colleague’s condition. “You know, it’s day to day,” he tells Entertainment Tonight. “He’s fighting his way back. It’s sad. That’s my boy. We’ve done three movies together, so I’m hoping for the best.”
Tracy and a group of others were returning from a comedy show in Delaware on June 7 when a Walmart truck travelling 65 miles per hour collided with their stopped van on the New Jersey Turnpike.
Comedian James “Jimmy Mack” McNair, a friend and mentor of the 30 Rock star, was killed in the wreck — and three other passengers in the van were injured. Tracy suffered broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken leg, and a brain injury.
“He’s fighting to get better, and if there’s a chance for him to be back to the Tracy Morgan he once was, he’s going to try to do that,” Tracy’s attorney Benedict Morelli said, per the Associated Press. “But we just don’t know because of the severity of the injuries that he sustained and the fact that he had such a severe brain injury.”
In the meantime, at least we can celebrate Tracy’s comedic timing in Top Five as we hold out hope for a triumphant comeback.
