“Put God first in everything you do.”
That was actor Denzel Washington’s message to the graduating class of New Orleans’ Dillard University over the weekend.
The Academy Award winner received loud cheers when he emphasized his relationship with God as his number-one piece of advice.
“Everything I have is by the grace of God. Understand that. It’s a gift,” he said.
“I pray that you put your slippers way under your bed tonight, so that when you wake up in the morning you have to get on your knees to reach them. And while you’re down there, say thank you,” he continued.
Washington also implored the graduates to try to “make a difference” during their careers, not just “make a living.”
And he cautioned them against focusing too much on material possessions.
“You will never see a U-Haul behind a hearse.”
