There’s really no right way to deliver this kind of news: Shia LaBeouf just went on “Sway in the Morning” and laid down a freestyle rap for almost six minutes. And the 30-year-old American Honey star ain’t bad for a dude who doesn’t rap for a living. There are lot of quotables throughout, to say the least, including “Get coke this the shipment / Jewish Pac with a twist of Whitman,” and “My life is like a highlight reel / Don’t like me? Check Twitter see how the Zeitgeist feel.”
In a year that’s been summed up well as the “best of times, worst of times,” this actually isn’t the craziest thing that could happen, or even the craziest thing Shia LaBeouf could do. But what stands out is when he goes after two of 2016’s most popular rappers, Drake and Lil Yachty (aka Lil Boat). In the case of Yachty, Shia criticized his lack of lyricism (kind of an old-guy critique, but fair enough) with the following: “Where did spitters go? Garbage litter shit they wrote / Miss me with that little boat / Cause bigger individuals committed to these principles / Was livin’ on they tippy toes / Sink ’em with a hippy’s hope / Consider them the misanthropes.” As for Drake, Shia became the latest to stick the 6 God with the claim that he doesn’t write his own lyrics. It’s worth noting that once before LaBeouf was accused of plagiarizing lyrics, but still, here’s what he said: “This trash rappin’ in October / Who wrote what for who? It’s all so below par / Substandard, used to be a litmus / If you didn’t write your own shit you got dismissed.” He trips over a few of the words, but it’s also important to remember freestyling live on the radio is probably the highest difficulty setting for any rapper to to enter and look cool.
